2012 Adventures - Wyoming
Once you get close you see that the lava cooled in the chamber in long cylindrical columns. It is reminiscent of the Palisades Columns along the Cowlitz River on the west side of White Pass in the Cascades.
We had not intended to do the mile and a half hike around the bottom, just get to the first geocaching point and get the picture. But then we decided to walk just a little ways to get some better pictures, then we caught sight of the climbers and so walked a little more to get a better angle on them, then realized we were half way around where the second geocache was located, and well since we were that far, we just came on around. We have a whole series of Devil’s Tower pictures - make sure you click on the climber ones to get the full effect of where they were!
Of course there was a Prairie Dog town at the base of Devil’s Tower, so we naturally had to stop so Dave could get a couple of pictures. Seems so long ago that we were involved in capturing and sending off Prairie Dog families from the Lawton City Park to other areas that wanted to maintain these neat little creatures. And despite what the cattle ranchers say, cows do not fall into their burrows. In fact their burrowing actually helps the prairies thrive, not to mention providing shelter for other animals.
All in all an interesting stop on our way east. From here we headed towards Yankton, South Dakota and spent 3 days at the Corps of Engineering Campground at the base of the dam. We were subject to heavy winds going east, but once we turned south we had a tail wind pushing us south towards Texas. It was in the high 30s the morning we left South Dakota - and 100 when we arrived at Hickory Creek, TX COE park - - what a change in three days!
After a week in the Dallas area - and spending the weekend with Megan and Kenneth we were scheduled for a short stop to have the safety inspection done on the coach (and the mirror fixed) - should have been a 20 minute stop. But because of a faulty clearance light up at the top of the rear cap, it turned into almost a 3 hour delay. Finally finished, we made our trip to Tyler where we will be for the next few weeks while we are poked and prodded, and I have 2 cataracts removed.

Close Encounters of the O’Keeffe Kind
