Set Up for the Winter

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

We have dropped the levelers until the middle of March in Mesa, Arizona.   We moved across the street from where we were the past two years so that in the afternoon we can sit out and have shade from the coach and not have to squint when visiting with guests.    Shadow is a little confused, she will start for the spot across the street, then realize that’s not home and look at us like we did something  awful to her.

Another benefit is that we have a grapefruit tree instead of an orange tree at our site.   Looks like the orange trees didn’t fair as well as the grapefruit this year, very little on the orange trees.   A couple feel like they are almost ready to pick - I love grapefruit in the morning!

Of course getting set up means crawling into our bays to get all of the things we stored away for winter - that’s Dave hunting for the appropriate extension cords for the light rope to finish our Christmas decorations.   I had picked up some extra tiny ornaments for our little Christmas tree - and I put them in a safe place until we got here and could put up the tree.   Of course a senior moment has since stricken and I can’t remember where that great storage place is!

We left Dallas on the morning of the 28th and headed out towards west Texas.   If you have never driven through West Texas I’m not sure how to describe it, but it is a lot of scrub grass, tumbleweeds, oil derricks, and not much else for miles and miles and miles - - like 3 days worth of travel.

On the 30th we headed into New Mexico where we usually stop for the night in Deming.   Well we got to Deming and it was just noon - - so we decided to go on to Lordsburg.   If you travel along I-10 at some point or another you will come upon one of the Border Patrol check points - this is the one between Las Cruces and Deming.   They are constructing a new off ramp to bring the traffic in at 2 lanes instead of one.

Getting a little closer you can see a row of cameras and detectors lining the road.

And here is a close up of those detectors.     Guess wine and kitty litter doesn’t show up on these detectors - those are the two things we seem to have a lot of in storage in the coach.

Before Lordsburg we pulled into a rest area to change drivers because we decided we would go on to Wilcox for the night as it was just 1:00 pm.   Once I started driving I decided, what the heck, Benson is only 35 miles farther, so on we went and arrived by 2:30 pm.    It was warmer that night than it had been in a while and we were able to head for Phoenix ahead of the wind storm that was due later that morning.

Unfortunately we seem to bring weather extremes with us, but it supposed to get warm this week and we’ve already taken Gordon and Juanita (who are staying at a park across the street from ours) to Wild Berry for breakfast.
